Chance to
buy Edwardian pews from local
church
OPEN DAY
– SATURDAY 20th
MARCH 2010 10 am – 4 pm
“Take
a pew”. This is the ‘news’ from the Methodist Church in Broadway.
The
church is taking part in
a charity initiative asking local people if they would like to buy one
of its
Edwardian seats to use as furniture in their own homes.
The
project allows people to
have a pew cut to size and adapted into a unique and functional piece
of
furniture that incorporates an element of local history and, perhaps
for some,
personal memories.
The
Take-A-Pew project, a
partnership between Herefordshire Council, the charity EnviroAbility
and the
Diocese of Hereford, is the first of its kind in the country. The charity not only recycles the pews into
bespoke furniture but creates jobs for people from disadvantaged groups
under
the guidance of skilled carpenters.
“This
is a one-off
opportunity because once the Broadway pews are gone they are gone
forever,”
said Martin Neicho of EnviroAbility.
Each
pew costs about £200
and the money will support Broadway church and EnviroAbility.
As
well as a venue for
weekly services the church building is used in the community. Replacing
the
pews with chairs will offer greater flexibility in its use.
“Removing
the pews from
churches is a sensitive issue but this project alleviates some of the
concerns
by recycling them, providing some employment for the disadvantaged and
contributing to help finance the chairs” explained David Savage a
member of the
Church.
Come
and view a Pew at the
Church on Saturday 20th March from 10a.m. to 4p.m.

The
project is supported by Advantage West Midlands through Herefordshire
