NCH Support Group

What is NCH?

The National Children's Home is one of the UK's leading children's charities.

What does NCH believe?

That all vulnerable children and young people should have the opportunity to reach their full potential.

What makes NCH special to us?

It has been the children's charity of the Methodist Church for 130 years, sharing the same values in terms of our commitment to social justice for children and families and the building of partnerships within the wider community. John Wesley said, "Go not only to those who need you but to those who need you most". Sadly the need now is as great as it ever was. Social Workers who have come to NCH after working eg for a Local Authority, have told us how the Christian ethic makes a positive difference.

What does the Support Group do?

We raise the profile of the charity and raise funds. Our events include concerts, coffee mornings, demonstrations, barn dances, suppers, sponsored walks, market charity stalls, street and racecourse collections. We raised £8794 in 2004/5.

How does NCH deliver?

Through 480 projects 98,000 children and families are helped every year. NCH works in partnership with thousands of organisations including other voluntary agencies, local authorities, churches, businesses, supporters, volunteers and of course, those very people who need help. 50 projects are in the Midlands. Our local Support Group has special links with some of them. At Harvest Festival we have brought suitable items for young people setting up home on their own. All these went to the Coventry AfterCare Project where young people leaving Care get help finding and furnishing a place to live. Also the staff cover fostering, dealing with problems associated with drugs, alcohol and abuse and ensuring that Children's Rights are not violated. Volunteers, called Independent Visitors make a long-term commitment to become a good friend to a young person in Care. About 25 projects in the Midlands are Family Centres. There is one in Leamington Spa at Lillington, where we help on open days and parties. The centre was set up in the last few years in an area with many large families of diverse ethnic origins, single parents and a significant drug problem. In fact it was the 5th most deprived area in the Midlands. The purpose is to give information, advice and support on all aspects of parenting; to help adults become more involved with their child's learning; to offer opportunities to meet new people and learn new things; and to provide fun times. Any parent, grandparent, carer or childminder can use the centre free of charge.

Why should people give to NCH?

90p in every £1 spent, goes towards the work with children and their families, which is more than any other childcare charity.
