Here is another family whose origin I have not traced out of Monmouthshire.

According to census data, Joseph Smith was born in about 1810 in Trevethin parish. A Joseph Smith was baptised at Trevethin parish church on 31 August 1813, son of Joseph and Mary Smith, along with brother Benjamin. (Joseph Smith had married Mary Ellis in 1809 at Trevethin).

Joseph Smith married Dinah LIGHT, on 18 June 1836 at Mynyddislwyn parish church.

Among Joseph and Dinah's children were Ann (1841), ELIZA (10 December 1844), Hannah (1848) and Mary (1851). Joseph's occupation was given variously as a collier (1844); a tipper at a balance pit (1851); a labourer (1861); and a labourer on the railway (at his death in 1870). The Smiths lived at Albion Terrace, Pontypool for most of that time.

Joseph died in 1870. Dinah died in 1897 at the Waterloo Inn, Trosnant, home of daughter Eliza, then wife of John POULSOM.
